A fund's name and broad strategy describe its mandate. Its holdings show how that mandate is implemented. Understanding the connection between the two is a central part of investment research.
Portugal Funds brings together portfolio information, documents and analysis so investors can examine exposures across strategies and structures on consistent terms.
From the holding to the economic activity
There are several layers to describe:
| Layer | Example | What it explains |
|---|---|---|
| Instrument | Shares, bonds, loans or fund units. | The legal and financial claim held by the fund. |
| Investee or vehicle | Operating company, holding company or another fund. | The entity through which the exposure is held. |
| Economic exposure | Hospitality, technology, collectibles or digital assets. | Activities or assets that influence the investment outcome. |
A loan to a company and an equity stake in that company share an economic context but have different payment terms and claims. Conversely, two funds described as different strategies can hold instruments linked to the same business.
Keep directly reported holdings separate from additional look-through analysis. Where the ownership chain or allocation cannot be established, do not assume an underlying exposure or its percentage.
Hospitality
Hospitality exposure can arise through shares, bonds or loans linked to accommodation, food services and other operating businesses. The research should identify the company, the instrument, the business activities and the allocation.
Where the documents distinguish operating activities, property ownership and other assets, preserve those distinctions. A hospitality label alone does not establish the legal treatment of an investment or its eligibility for an immigration programme.
Collectibles
Exposure to art, vehicles, wine or other collectibles may be direct or held through businesses and investment vehicles. Useful information includes the type of assets, ownership arrangements, valuation approach, income sources and realisation process.
Describe whether an investment outcome depends on operating income, asset sales or both. This makes the comparison more informative than assigning a positive or negative judgement to the theme.
Digital assets
Distinguish holdings of digital assets from investment in companies that operate in the digital-asset sector. These exposures need not move in the same way.
Research fields include the assets or businesses involved, the instruments used, custody arrangements, valuation and the share of the portfolio. Where other funds or vehicles sit between the fund and the ultimate assets, show the layers that are supported by the documents.
Apply the same approach to every sector
The same method applies to renewable energy, healthcare, industrial companies, listed equities and private credit. Identify the instrument, the economic activity, the allocation and the date.
Compare concentration within a fund and overlap between funds. Investing in several funds does not by itself demonstrate different underlying exposures; the holdings provide that evidence.
Structure, costs and responsibilities
Identify the manager, advisors, depositary and other relevant entities, and explain their documented functions. Compare fee arrangements, investment decision responsibilities and reporting terms as separate fields.
An external advisor, an intermediate vehicle or a particular sector does not by itself establish investment quality. The objective is to make the structure understandable.
Keep Golden Visa eligibility separate
Portfolio analysis describes economic exposure. Golden Visa eligibility involves the legal requirements and documentation applicable to the investment. For the current investment routes, Article 44 of Law 56/2023 introduced a prohibition on investment activities intended directly or indirectly for real-estate investment. A hospitality label alone does not resolve that legal assessment; the instruments, activities and structure need to be considered. Record these separately and ask qualified legal counsel to confirm the proposed subscription.
